How the 14 Hours Run

From the Interbus terminal in Taormina to the Sciara del Fuoco and back.

Meet at the Interbus terminal on Via Luigi Pirandello. The coach takes about an hour and a half to Milazzo, where you board a shared motorboat with toilets and a bar.

  2. About two hours on Panarea

The boat approaches by Cala Junco and Zimmari beach. Walk the lanes and harbour shops, then cruise round the islets off the island.

  3. Stromboli until sunset

Pass Ginostra from the sea, then land for free time around San Vincenzo, about two and a half hours including the cruise.

  4. Sciara del Fuoco, then home

After dark the boat moves along the Sciara del Fuoco, sea permitting. Back at Milazzo you take the coach, reaching Taormina around midnight.

PLANNING

A Long Day from Taormina, Hour by Hour

What the 14 hours hold, what the higher price buys, and who should book the boat in Milazzo instead.

Taormina is on Sicily’s east coast and the Aeolian boats leave from Milazzo on the north coast, so a day trip to Stromboli from Taormina is really a Milazzo boat excursion with a coach at both ends. The Chic Panarea and Stromboli Day Tour, run by SAT Group, collects you at the Interbus terminal on Via Luigi Pirandello and gets you back there around midnight. The listing gives the whole day as 14 hours. It costs from $125 per person and holds 4.3 from 523 reviews (our breakdown).

How the 14 hours break down

About three of those hours are on the coach: roughly an hour and a half each way between Taormina and Milazzo. At Milazzo you board a shared motorboat with toilets and a bar. A tour leader stays with the group all day, and commentary is in English, German and Italian. One guest found the commentary hard to hear out on deck, so stay near a speaker if you want the background.

The first landing is Panarea, approached past Cala Junco bay and the small beach at Zimmari. You get about two hours to walk the lanes, sit at a harbour bar or look round the shops. The boat then circles the rocks and islets off Panarea and heads north, passing the hamlet of Ginostra from the sea before landing at Stromboli. Free time there runs around San Vincenzo, the old centre of the village, until sunset; the listing counts it as about two and a half hours, including the cruise. That is enough for a walk through the village or an hour on the black beach.

After dark the boat moves along the Sciara del Fuoco so you can watch for explosions from the water. Then it is the crossing back to Milazzo and the coach home. The return to Taormina is around midnight, rain or shine.

Why it costs more than booking the boat in Milazzo

From Milazzo you can book the boat alone. Navisal’s Panarea & Stromboli Cruise Excursion starts from $57 per person and Tarnav’s Panarea and Stromboli Boat Trip by Night from $63. The Taormina tour is $125. The difference pays for the coach both ways, the tour leader and not having to drive or park in Milazzo, then drive back after 22:00.

Doing it yourself is straightforward with a car. Taormina to Milazzo is about an hour by road; by train it is around two hours with a change in Messina, and from Messina Giuntabus coaches reach the Milazzo hydrofoil terminal in about 50 minutes. Navisal wants you at its office on Via dei Mille an hour before its 11:15 sailing (the time from 15 September), so you would leave Taormina by about 9:00. The boat is back in Milazzo between about 21:30 and 22:30, which puts you home not much earlier than the coach would. Parking near the port is hard to find, one reviewer warns, and if you are counting on public transport home late at night, check the last connection before you book. For two people the boat-only route saves about $136 before fuel and parking. Our Milazzo departures page compares the two boats.

The Cefalù version

If you are staying on the Tyrrhenian coast, the Panarea and Stromboli from Cefalù trip by Noema works the same way. Pickup is from 11 points in and around Cefalù, including several hotels and resorts, and the coach takes about an hour and three quarters each way. Ashore you get about two and a half hours on each island, the boat goes to the Sciara del Fuoco at sunset, and you are back around midnight. It costs from $108 per person and holds 4.7, but from only 28 reviews, so that rating rests on a small sample. The guide speaks English, Italian or French. The itinerary labels the Stromboli stop as hiking, but it is free time; no climb is included (our breakdown).

Landing tax and what to bring

Neither coach tour includes the Aeolian landing tax, so carry cash. It is currently €5 in summer (1 June to 30 September) and €2.50 out of season (1 October to 31 May). Meals and drinks are extra too, and on the SAT boat takeaway food and drink may not be eaten on board, so eat on the islands. Bring comfortable shoes, swimwear and a towel, sunscreen and a warm layer for the evening crossing.

What you see at the Sciara del Fuoco

Boats keep at least 2 nautical miles off the Sciara del Fuoco coast under a 2022 Milazzo port authority ordinance, so you are watching from a distance. Stromboli’s alert level is yellow and its activity changes week to week: lava reached the sea in early May 2026, while other evenings bring only a red glow and the sound of explosions. The stop depends on the sea and the captain’s call. Read more in Stromboli by night.

Who the Taormina day trip suits

It suits you if you are based in Taormina without a car, want one booking for the whole day and do not mind a long one on a busy shared boat. The listing flags it as unsuitable if you are prone to seasickness.

It does not suit you if you want to climb. Guided sunset hikes such as the Sunset Trekking to the Sciara del Fuoco start in Stromboli village two hours before sunset and finish late, with no ferry back, so you need a night on the island. As of the May 2025 ordinance you may walk alone up to 290 m and with an authorised guide up to 400 m; the summit has been closed since the July 2019 paroxysm. See our Stromboli volcano hike page and, if you are still deciding, which Panarea and Stromboli boat tour is right for you.

"The overall experience;helped by a calm sea. More information on Stromboli volcano in general would have been good and it was difficult to hear the c9mmentarywhen outside."

"⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Perfect Day Trip to Panarea & Stromboli We had a perfect day on this tour from Taormina to Milazzo, followed by a wonderful sailing excursion to Panarea and later to Stromboli before returning to Milazzo then to Taormina. Everything was well organized, the scenery was breathtaking, and we had plenty of time to enjoy both islands. Panarea was charming and beautiful, while Stromboli was truly unforgettable. A special mention goes to Alessandra, our tour guide, who was fantastic throughout the day. She was friendly, knowledgeable, organized, and made sure everyone felt comfortable and informed. Her enthusiasm and professionalism really enhanced the experience. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Sicily and wanting to experience the beauty of the Aeolian Islands in a single day!"

"In terms of transportation, pick-up from Taormina is perfectly managed. As stated in the day trip listing: the boat is shared with other groups. Expect 100-200 people on the boat (3 decks) with you. Arrive early enough to get the good seats at the very top of the boat 🙏🏻 Panarea, awesome! Stromboli: exceptional! The sunset with the view of the lava explosions is unforgettable."

Pauline France

"Everything was great, well organized. You always have to expect a lot of people, but we always found a good spot on the boat. You shouldn't have euphoric expectations regarding the eruption of Stromboli. There was a cloud over the crater when we were there. Everything was quiet; even if there were small lava flows, you couldn't see them. The tour operator was patient and also waited."

Udo Germany

"Our guide Alessandra was great. She explained everything precisely and clearly. The stay in Panarea and on Stromboli was nice. After Stromboli, there is the coastal tour where the boat moves slowly and you can see the active volcano. It is worth taking a seat at the very top left of the boat, as you have the best view there. We saw 3 small eruptions. If you sit in the back (at the very bottom or on the middle deck), the boat is very loud at full speed."

"Very much. The eruptions of Stromboli were impressive. The tour guide was very good and careful."
