From Cefalù: Panarea and Stromboli - Aeolian Islands

About This Experience
Pickup is from one of 11 points in the Cefalù area, from Piazza Vittime 16 Marzo 1978 to hotels and resorts along the coast such as Hotel Costa Verde and Mangia's Pollina Resort. The coach takes about an hour and three quarters to reach Milazzo harbour, and the guide talks about the Aeolian islands on the way. Note that boarding is at Milazzo, not Cefalù.
From Milazzo the boat takes about an hour and a half to reach Panarea, arriving by way of Cala Junco bay. You then have around two and a half hours of free time on the island to walk the village lanes, find a bar by the harbour or swim. Panarea is the smallest of the inhabited Aeolian islands, so the main village and the bays near the landing are easy to cover on foot in that time.
A crossing of about 45 minutes brings you to Stromboli, where you have another two and a half hours ashore. Most people spend it in the village or on the black sand beach, swimming or simply waiting for the evening. The itinerary labels this stop as hiking, but the description and reviews point to free time, and there is no guided climb on the volcano included in this trip. Bring cash for a drink or a snack in the village.
As the sun sets the boat heads to the Sciara del Fuoco so you can watch for explosions from the water, sea permitting. Activity varies, so what you see differs from evening to evening. The boat then sails back to Milazzo and the coach returns you to your pickup point around midnight. It is a long day, much of it on the move.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.7/5 by 28 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
The trip from Cefalù to Stromboli was worth it. We were picked up on time at the train station and driven to Milazzo. There, the operator of the excursion boat took over the reins, and we sailed to Stromboli with a two-hour stopover on Panarea. During the trip, we were given some very interesting information about the Aeolian Islands. On Stromboli, we then had about two hours to explore the island or go swimming. At sunset, we then went to the Sciara di Fuoco, and Stromboli welcomed us with a few clearly visible magma eruptions. We had about 30 minutes to watch the natural spectacle before heading back. It should be noted that the boat we were on can hold up to 300 passengers, so you are not alone. In addition, it is a motorboat, and the German translation of the description, which refers to "sailing," is misleading.

Chiara is the best :) We felt taken care of and informed about everything. It was worth it, day and night. Logistics and transportation, especially by boat, were perfect. I highly recommend it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where am I picked up?
There are 11 pickup points in and around Cefalù, including Piazza Vittime 16 Marzo 1978, Hotel Costa Verde, Grand Palladium Sicilia Resort, Mangia's Pollina Resort, Acacia Resort and Hotel Dolcestate. You choose one when booking and are dropped back there at the end.
Is the landing fee included?
No. The operator states that the landing fee (€5 from June to September, €2.50 from October to May) is not included and must be paid in cash, so keep the exact amount handy on the day.
Do we climb the volcano on Stromboli?
No. The time on Stromboli is free time, about two and a half hours, which most people spend in the village or on the black sand beach. The volcano is seen from the boat at the Sciara del Fuoco.
Will I see the volcano erupt?
You may. The boat goes to the Sciara del Fuoco at sunset so you can watch for explosions, but activity varies from evening to evening and the stop depends on the sea.
What time do we get back to Cefalù?
The listing gives a return to Cefalù around midnight. Allow for nearly four hours of coach travel across the day on top of the boat crossings, so it is a long outing even though the time ashore is generous.
