From Lipari: Panarea and Stromboli Small-Group Boat Tour

About This Experience
You meet the skipper on the quay at Marina Corta in Lipari town shortly before 11:30. The boat is a speedboat run by a skipper and a deckhand, with a small group on board rather than a ferry crowd, so you board straight from the dock and head north-east. After about 45 minutes the first stop is Cala Junco, the rock-ringed natural pool on Panarea's southern tip, where everyone gets a first swim.
The boat then moves round to San Pietro, Panarea's harbour village, for about two hours ashore. That is time enough to walk the lanes up from the port, sit down for lunch in one of the restaurants (not included) or simply find a bench with a view. Back on board, the route runs past Bottaro, where gas bubbles up from fumaroles on the sea floor, and Lisca Bianca with its Lovers' Cave, with two more swim stops among the islets.
The crossing to Stromboli takes about 50 minutes. Before landing there is a swim in the dark water off the island, then about two hours ashore at Scari. You can walk into the village, lie on the black sand beach near the port or eat an early dinner at a local restaurant, which again is at your own expense. Keep an eye on the clock, as the boat leaves again around sunset.
At sunset the boat leaves Scari, rounds Strombolicchio and holds position off the Sciara del Fuoco, the scarred slope where Stromboli's explosions roll down to the sea. What you see depends on the volcano that evening and on the sea. Water and biscuits are served with a glass of Malvasia, and the run home ends at Marina Corta between 9 and 10 pm.

- Stromboli's activity varies from night to night and explosions are never guaranteed; the Sciara del Fuoco stop depends on the sea.

Amazing day out. You snorkel and swim in places with the clearest water. Amazing sunset and Stromboli eruption. Would definitely recommend!

This was one of the absolute highlights of our time in the Aeolian Islands! From the moment we stepped aboard, the crew made us feel so welcome and looked after us all day. Panarea was absolutely beautiful, and we loved wandering through the charming streets before heading off to some incredible swim stops in the clearest water. Visiting Stromboli was something we’ll never forget. Seeing the active volcano up close was an unforgettable experience, and standing on the island’s unique black sand beach made it even more special

We enjoyed our boat day however we booked an English speaking tour and our guide didn’t speak English. There was an English recording played at each site so we gained some information however we couldn’t ask any questions. Even communicating when to be back at the boat was difficult. Also the tour was advertised as being a 12 people tour but there was 20 people on it. We still had a great day and enjoyed the beautiful swims and islands.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly do we meet in Lipari, and when?
At the Marina Corta dock in Lipari town, Piazza di Marina Corta, shortly before 11:30. The precise spot on the quay is sent with your booking. Marina Corta is the small harbour below the castle, a short walk from Corso Vittorio Emanuele, so arrive a few minutes early to find the boat.
How much time do we get on Panarea and Stromboli?
Around two hours at each island: San Pietro on Panarea in the early afternoon and Scari on Stromboli before sunset. On Panarea that is enough for lunch and a walk through the village; on Stromboli you can reach the black sand beach near the port, walk into the village or eat an early dinner.
Will we see lava at the Sciara del Fuoco?
Possibly, but nobody can promise it. The boat waits off the Sciara del Fuoco after sunset, and on many evenings explosions show as glowing bursts and rolling debris. Stromboli's activity varies, and the stop itself depends on the sea being calm enough to hold position, so treat lava as a likely bonus rather than a certainty.
Can we eat on the islands?
Yes. Lunch is at your own expense in San Pietro on Panarea and dinner at your own expense on Stromboli, both in local restaurants. The crew serves water and biscuits with a glass of Malvasia, usually later in the evening, so a snack for the afternoon swims is a good idea.
What time do we get back to Lipari?
Between 9 and 10 pm at Marina Corta. The exact time depends on how long the boat stays off the Sciara del Fuoco and on the sea on the crossing home, which takes about an hour. Bring a warm layer, as it gets cool on deck after dark.
