About This Experience

The motorship leaves Milazzo at 11:00 and takes about an hour and a half to reach Panarea. You get around two hours ashore. San Pietro's lanes lead up to the church of San Pietro, and with the time available you can walk or take one of the island's small taxis to the Bronze Age village at Capo Milazzese and the cove of Cala Junco, or head for the beach at Cala degli Zimmari.

Leaving Panarea, the boat passes the islets of Basiluzzo, Spinazzola, Lisca Bianca, Dattilo, Bottaro and Lisca Nera, with the Panarelli and Formiche rocks, before docking at Scari on Stromboli. The listing gives about two and a quarter to two and a half hours here: enough to climb to the church square of San Vincenzo for the view of Strombolicchio, see the house where Rossellini and Ingrid Bergman stayed while filming, or swim off the black beach.

Back on board, the boat circles Strombolicchio and then moves under the Sciara del Fuoco, where it stops for about 30 minutes around sunset. If the volcano is active that evening you may see bursts of ash and glowing lapilli, but nothing is guaranteed and the sky may not be fully dark when the boat turns for home. Bring a warm layer, as the deck cools quickly once the sun has gone.

In high summer you are back in Milazzo between about 21:45 and 22:15. From 15 September arrival moves to roughly 21:00 to 21:30, and from 1 October to about 20:00 to 20:30. The landing tax is included in the ticket. A guide gives commentary on board while sailing, but there is no guide on the islands, so plan your own time ashore. Food and drinks are extra.

Good to Know & Caveats

  • The Sciara del Fuoco stop is timed around sunset, so the sky may not be fully dark; volcanic activity varies and explosions are never guaranteed.
  • All stops and their length are subject to local ordinances in force on the day.
  • The tour runs rain or shine; the sea decides whether the Sciara stop can go ahead.
  • Only small dogs are allowed on board, for a €10 supplement paid at the Milazzo ticket office.
  • It is a long day on a shared boat with many passengers, and the engine is noticeable below deck.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.2/5 by 2,138 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

The English- and German speaking guide was not really interested in "guiding". He basically just translated logistic infos like "the boat departs at 6.30pm" whereas the Italian speaking guide was talking so much about the history and landscape and everything. A real shame. Plus we left the Sciara del Fuoco before it was even dark so we could not really see the explosions as stunningly as they would have been in pure darkness.

the excitement of seeing a live volcano. a brilliant sunset. followed by loud thunder, intense lightning was exhilarating.

I liked the tour, the timings and the ship. No problems with the food on board like arancini and granita, all good. Guide was good. I would suggest to bring some ear phones or ear buds to reduce the impact of the diesel engine. We sat on the bottom deck quite comfortably apart from that. We had a table and hood views. The ten hour day flew by.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I board in Milazzo?

The trip starts and ends at Via dei Mille 17 in Milazzo, by the port, where Tarnav's ticket office is. The boat leaves at 11:00, so give yourself time to find parking and check in before then.

Is the landing tax included?

Yes. The Aeolian Islands entrance tax is listed as included in the price, so there is no landing tax to pay in cash on the day. The operator does mention one cash extra: a €10 supplement for small dogs.

Is it really a night trip?

The boat stops under the Sciara del Fuoco for about 30 minutes around sunset and sails back to Milazzo after dark. The sky may not be completely dark during the stop, and how much you see depends on the volcano's activity that evening.

What time do we get back?

In summer arrival in Milazzo is between about 21:45 and 22:15, depending on sunset. From 15 September it moves to about 21:00 to 21:30, and from 1 October to about 20:00 to 20:30.

Can I eat on the islands?

Yes, food and drinks are not included, so most people eat during the two stops. Stromboli's Scari and San Vincenzo area has places to eat; outside high season fewer places are open on Panarea, so a packed lunch is a sensible backup.
