From Tropea: Lipari, Panarea and Stromboli by Night

About This Experience
Check in at the Eolie Savadori desk at Tropea's fishing harbour at least 30 minutes before departure, show your booking and pay the Aeolian landing tax (€5 from June to September, €2.50 from October to May) in cash. The boat is a large excursion vessel shared with many passengers, with commentary over the microphone in Italian, English and German. It reaches Lipari's Marina Corta around 12:30 and stays until about 3 pm.
On Lipari you can visit the Archaeological Museum, walk the main street and have lunch in town, or join an optional island boat tour at extra cost. The operator advises against a beach swim here, as the nearest beaches need a taxi. Panarea follows, arriving at San Pietro around 3:45 pm and leaving at about 5 pm, with time for the village lanes, the shops and a granita. There is no swimming on this stop.
The boat reaches Stromboli at about 5:50 pm and leaves at 7:30 pm, with boarding starting ten minutes earlier. The boat will not wait, so be back on time. The black sand beaches are close to the harbour, so this is the place to swim, and there is time for a walk into the village and an early dinner.
After leaving Stromboli the boat waits about 30 minutes in front of the Sciara del Fuoco, weather and sea permitting, to watch the volcano in the dark. Activity varies, so explosions are never certain. The return is late: around 10:30 pm at Tropea and 11:30 pm at Vibo Marina. All times are indicative and confirmed by the on-board guide on the day.

What Travelers Say

Great itinerary. Had plenty of time at each stop. Good value for a 12 hour trip. only downside was that there was around 200 people on board a bit too many for that size boat.

Amazing trip, we have seen vulcano activ, we have seen dolfins naturally very closed to the boat. We had nice walk on Lipary, super lunch outside the tourists, 1,5 km from the port. :-)

Tour was packed but organized. Plenty of time on the islands. Bar offered drinks and snacks at moderate prices. Crew helpful could have ended the last hour and a half with some music at night .

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I check in at Tropea, and how early?
At the Eolie Savadori boarding desk at the fishing harbour, Porto Pescatori, on Via Marina below the town. Be there at least 30 minutes before departure, show your reservation and pay the landing tax (€5 from June to September, €2.50 from October to May) in cash. Check your confirmation for the exact departure time.
Is the landing tax included?
No. The Aeolian Islands landing fee (€5 from June to September, €2.50 from October to May) is paid in cash at the check-in desk in Tropea. It isn't part of the online price, and card facilities can be limited at the port and on the islands, so have the cash ready.
Can I swim on this trip?
On Stromboli, yes: the black sand beaches are near the harbour and you have well over an hour and a half there. The operator advises against swimming on Lipari, where the beaches need a taxi, and there is no swimming stop on Panarea.
Will I see lava at the Sciara del Fuoco?
The boat waits about 30 minutes in front of the Sciara del Fuoco after dark, which is when explosions show up best. Stromboli's activity varies, so nothing is guaranteed, and in poor weather or rough sea the captain may skip the stop for safety and head back to port.
What time do we get back?
Around 10:30 pm at Tropea and around 11:30 pm at Vibo Marina. These times are indicative and depend on the sea, harbour-office instructions and how long the boat stays at the Sciara del Fuoco. If you're driving, plan for a late finish.
