About This Experience

This is Comerci Navigazione's Stromboli-only evening option from Tropea. Boarding starts at 1:30pm for the 2pm departure, the crew help with check-in, and the landing tax (€5 from June to September, €2.50 from October to May) is paid before you board. The crossing takes about an hour and a half, and the boat lands at Scari, the port below the village of San Vincenzo, at around 3:30pm. There are no other island landings, so the whole afternoon goes to Stromboli.

Ashore you have close to four hours. Long beaches of black pebbles and sand run either side of the port, and the water is good for swimming, though reviewers recommend water shoes for the stones. Uphill, the Church of San Vincenzo stands on a panoramic square looking out to Strombolicchio; you can walk the steady incline or take one of the three-wheeled ape taxis.

Following the main road beyond the church brings you to the Casa di Ingrid, the house linked to Roberto Rossellini's film Stromboli with Ingrid Bergman and now a house museum. The village restaurants serve dinner if you book ahead, while bakeries and bars sell arancine, focaccia and granita for something quicker. Swimwear, towels and snorkel masks are not provided, so bring your own.

At around 7:20pm the boat leaves for the far side of the island and stops for about 20 minutes in front of the Sciara del Fuoco. If the volcano is active, you may see glowing material thrown from the craters and, on some evenings, rolling down towards the sea. Commentary comes over the speaker in Italian and English, and reviewers also heard German. The boat is due back in Tropea around 10pm, and the return crossing can be breezy.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.3/5 by 50 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

Everything was perfect, just as described. Although it wasn't in the itinerary, when we saw dolphins, the ship turned around and made several laps so that we could get a good look at them. They also waited long enough during the volcanic eruptions for us to see larger eruptions. Overall, we are completely satisfied! :)

Unforgettable experience! Seeing the active volcano at night from the boat was absolutely magical and breathtaking. Everything went smoothly and it made our trip to Calabria complete. A absolute must-do when visiting the area!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I board in Tropea?

At the Comerci Navigazione boarding point on Via Raf Vallone in Tropea port. Boarding starts 30 minutes before the 2pm departure, and staff help with check-in. The landing tax (€5 from June to September, €2.50 from October to May) is paid before boarding, so have cash ready when you arrive.

Is the landing tax included in the price?

No. The landing tax (€5 from June to September, €2.50 from October to May), agreed with the local authorities and the coast guard, is excluded and paid before boarding. Food, drinks, towels, swimwear and beach accessories such as diving masks are not included either.

Do I need to book dinner on Stromboli?

It helps. The operator suggests booking ahead if you want a sit-down meal in one of the village restaurants, since many boats arrive on summer afternoons. For something quicker, bars and bakeries along the main street sell arancine, focaccia and granita, which fit easily into the time ashore.

Will I see lava from the boat?

Possibly. The boat stops in front of the Sciara del Fuoco for about 20 minutes after leaving Stromboli at around 7:20pm. If the volcano is active you may see explosions and glowing material, but activity varies, and in high summer the stop can fall around sunset rather than in full darkness.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If bad weather or a change in directives from the authorities prevents the trip, it is rescheduled to the nearest available date. The return crossing can be windy even on good days, so bring a jacket for the evening.
