Tropea: Lipari, Panarea, and Stromboli Boat Tour by Night

About This Experience
The boat leaves Tropea's commercial port at 9:30, and you need to be at the Tripodi boarding point 30 minutes earlier to check in. It reaches Marina Corta on Lipari around 12:15 for a stop of about two and a half hours. Lipari has plenty of restaurants for lunch, and the Basilica of San Bartolomeo, the castle and the Archaeological Museum are all within walking distance of the harbour.
If you would rather be on the water, an optional boat tour costing €10 runs along Lipari's wilder west coast to Vinci beach and Valle Muria and across to Vulcano's Grotta del Cavallo and Piscine di Venere. For a swim at Canneto beach you need to take local transport. The boat leaves Lipari at 2:45 pm and reaches San Pietro on Panarea at about 3:30 pm.
On Panarea you can walk uphill through the village to the small church of San Pietro for a view over the islets. Cala Junco and the Bronze Age village at Capo Milazzese are about 45 minutes away on foot, so take a taxi if you want to see them. The boat leaves at 5:15 pm and arrives at Scari on Stromboli at about 5:45 pm.
Stromboli gets about an hour and a half by the timetable: time for the black sand beaches, the village of San Vincenzo and an early dinner. At 7:20 pm the boat sails round Strombolicchio and stops for about 30 minutes under the Sciara del Fuoco. Whether the volcano puts on a show depends on its activity that night and on the sea. Arrival back in Tropea is estimated at 10:15 pm.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.1/5 by 677 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
The organization was excellet, the free time on the 3 islands was enough for eating, drinking, exploring the sites. You pay an extra 5 € on departure at the marina and there's an optional cruise for 10 € when arriving on Panarea. You may choose to stay on the island for 2 hours, or you may buy the option that means you stay on the ship, go a circle around the island and get interesteng detailed info on it, and after that you have 1 hour on Panarea. When going to the Sciara del fuoco where you can see the orange/red eruptions of Stromboli by night, it doesn't matter on which side of the ship you have your seat, as the ship turns around, so from both sides of the ship it can be seen. All in all, the whole trip was fascinating, the crew was kind and professional. This cruise worth the €.

Good trip, well organised but mostly in Italian and only few sentences in English. The places are picturesque and beautiful.

Day was mostly great in terms of destinations and sights. However the vast majority of the time on boat was with loud Italian voice over saying who knows what for hours on end - despite apparently being an English speaking tour. Every now and then we were thrown a sentence or two in English - one wonders what vital stuff we missed?

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I check in at Tropea, and how early?
At the Tripodi Navigazione boarding point in Tropea's commercial port, at least 30 minutes before the 9:30 departure, so by 9:00. Bring a passport or ID card. Hotel pickup isn't included, so allow time to get down to the port and park if you're driving.
Is the landing tax included?
No. The Aeolian Islands landing tax is listed as an exclusion and is paid at the port on the morning of the trip. Bring cash for it, along with money for the optional €10 boat tour on Lipari if you want to join it.
How long are the stops on each island?
About two and a half hours on Lipari (12:15 to 2:45 pm), about an hour and three quarters on Panarea (3:30 to 5:15 pm) and about an hour and a half on Stromboli (5:45 to 7:20 pm). Times can shift with the sea and port instructions.
Is the commentary in English?
There is a guide on board and the trip is sold in English, Italian, Dutch and German, but travellers report that most of the commentary is in Italian, with short English summaries. If detailed explanations matter to you, read up on the islands before you go.
Will we see lava at the Sciara del Fuoco?
The boat stops for about 30 minutes under the Sciara del Fuoco after leaving Stromboli at 7:20 pm, as the light fades. Explosions are often visible, but Stromboli's activity changes from night to night and the stop depends on the sea, so nothing is guaranteed.
